Thoughtful Hospitality
in Khao Sok
Set beside the Sok River near Khao Sok National Park, Riverside Cottages has always aimed to work with the surrounding rainforest environment rather than against it. No tourism business can ever be completely impact-free. However, we believe thoughtful hospitality and local collaboration can make a positive difference. They also help build long-term environmental awareness that protects Khao Sok’s landscapes and communities.
Our approach to sustainability is not built around marketing claims or luxury eco-branding. Instead, it focuses on practical decisions that help reduce environmental impact. At the same time, we aim to support local people, preserve native ecosystems, and offer guests a more authentic rainforest experience.
Many of these choices are simple, but together they help create a style of hospitality that feels more connected to the natural rhythms of Khao Sok.
Living With the Rainforest
One of the first things guests notice at Riverside Cottages is the network of elevated walkways. They connect the cottages, restaurant, and shared spaces throughout the property.
These raised structures are not simply a design feature. The resort sits beside the Sok River in a lowland rainforest and wetland environment. Elevating the buildings and walkways helps reduce soil compaction. It also allows water, plants, insects, amphibians, and native vegetation to continue moving naturally beneath the resort.
The elevated layout reduces the need for concrete and heavily compacted surfaces. This helps keep the land open and biologically active. It also helps guests move comfortably around the property during all seasons.
This approach to construction has become one of the defining characteristics of Riverside Cottages. It reflects our wider philosophy of living alongside the rainforest rather than reshaping it entirely.
Open-Air Cottage Design
The cottages at Riverside Cottages are designed around natural airflow and open-air tropical living rather than sealed, heavily air-conditioned accommodation.
High ceilings, screened windows, ceiling fans, shaded surroundings, and natural ventilation all help create a comfortable environment. At the same time, guests remain connected to the sounds and atmosphere of the rainforest.
For many visitors, hearing the river, birds, frogs, and jungle sounds at night becomes an important part of the overall Khao Sok experience.
Reducing dependence on energy-intensive cooling systems also helps lower electricity consumption throughout the resort. Additional efforts to reduce energy use include line-drying laundry using solar heat and limiting unnecessary electrical appliances within the cottages.
Protecting Native Plants and Wildlife
The rainforest surrounding Khao Sok National Park is home to a remarkable variety of plant and animal life. Many of these species are found only in Southern Thailand.
Throughout the resort grounds, we focus on preserving native plant species and encouraging natural biodiversity. Rather than importing ornamental plants, we work with the landscape that already exists.
Wild orchids, jungle fruit trees, palms, native grasses, and flowering tropical plants can all be found throughout the resort. Together, they help support birds, butterflies, insects, and other small wildlife throughout the year.
Several years ago, erosion along the riverbank beside the restaurant became a growing concern. To address the problem, native grasses and wild mango trees were planted along the riverbank. Their strong root systems gradually stabilised the area. This natural approach reduced the need for artificial retaining structures.
Guests exploring the self-guided nature trail can observe many of these native species. Along the way, signs and QR-based information help explain the local rainforest ecosystem.
Wildlife sightings around the resort regularly include monkeys, owls, hornbills, bats, flying lizards, otters, and numerous bird species. On rare occasions, wild elephants descend from the nearby forest to feed on native palms and wild bananas growing close to the property.
Reducing Waste and Pollution
Riverside Cottages continues to explore practical ways to reduce waste, unnecessary resource use, and pollution throughout daily resort operations.
Single-use plastics are minimized where possible, and recyclable packaging is preferred whenever practical. Additional low-impact practices include:
- Refill drinking water stations for guests
- Glass water bottles in guest rooms instead of disposable plastic bottles
- Waste separation for recyclable, non-recyclable, and organic materials
Organic waste from the resort is sent to nearby farms for composting or animal feed rather than entering landfill systems unnecessarily.
We also avoid the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides throughout the resort grounds. This helps protect the surrounding river system while supporting healthier conditions for local wildlife, insects, and soil ecosystems.
The soaps and shampoos provided in guest rooms are made locally. They are produced by a women’s collective using coconut-based ingredients and environmentally conscious methods.
Reducing Light Pollution
Artificial lighting can significantly affect nocturnal wildlife and alter natural rainforest behaviour patterns.
For this reason, Riverside Cottages aims to reduce unnecessary light pollution by using lighting only where required. Lights are also directed carefully throughout the property to help minimise disturbance to the surrounding environment. We maintain relatively low light intensity and use warmer-toned lighting in many areas of the resort.
Some overnight lighting remains necessary for guest safety, particularly along walkways and shared areas. However, the resort generally avoids excessive brightness in order to maintain a calmer nighttime environment for both wildlife and guests.
Supporting Local Communities
For us, sustainability also means supporting the people and communities connected to Khao Sok.
Many of our guides, suppliers, builders, drivers, and staff members come from the surrounding area. We also source many of the products and services used by the resort locally whenever possible.
Beyond the resort itself, we also support and collaborate with several community-led organizations and educational initiatives including:
- Andaman Center for Migrant Education
- Jungle Life Camp
- Moken Ocean Guardians
These organizations work in areas including:
- Conservation
- Migrant education
- Environmental awareness
- Cultural preservation
- Ecological restoration within Southern Thailand
Our goal is not only to reduce environmental impact. We also want tourism to contribute positively to the long-term wellbeing of the local communities connected to Khao Sok.
Sustainability as an Ongoing Process
We do not believe sustainability is something a business simply achieves and finishes. It is an ongoing process of learning, adapting, improving, and making more thoughtful decisions over time.
Some of the practices at Riverside Cottages are simple. Others continue to evolve as better solutions become available. We know there is always more that can be improved. We also continue learning from guests, local communities, and conservation groups. At the same time, we remain aware of the environmental challenges connected to modern tourism and the importance of improving where possible.
For us, sustainability is about maintaining a respectful relationship with the rainforest, river, wildlife, and local communities. These are the things that make Khao Sok such a special place to visit.
The Story Behind Our Approach
