Most people visit Thailand in the cooler months between November and the end of April. It is much drier, so they avoid the afternoon showers associated with wet season. In April it can be incredibly hot and dry but In May the cooling rains arrive. The Thailand rainy season is when we experience some of the most exciting things that the country has to offer, and it is certainly true for visitors to Khao Sok. Short answer – yes, it is a great time to visit Thailand and Khao Sok.
What are the Advantages of Visiting Khao Sok During the Thailand Rainy Season?
Quieter
For one thing it is much quieter. Less people mean more space and less footfall. In the high season resources are sometimes stretched to the limit resulting in crowds of people and much bigger groups out on the tours. This is certainly true for Cheow Lan lake Tours and other activities in the Khao Sok National Park.
It does not mean quieter from the point of view of nature though. In fact, after a rain shower many animals like to sing for joy – especially frogs and toads. What a fabulous symphony they produce.

Cheaper accommodation and packages
Generally, hotel owners reduce their prices at this time to encourage more people to visit. Prices for accommodation and tours in May and June can be much cheaper. And you can also benefit from better choices as there is more availability.
- Get the best service at a cheaper rate.
- You do not need to book months in advance which makes planning around the monsoon storms easier.
Average room rates in Khao Sok by month:
| Month | Average Price (USD) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| November – March | $53 – $72 | Peak tourist season with highest prices |
| April – October | $30 – $52 | Low season – best time for bargains. |
Water activities are more exciting
Many of the activities that wow visitors to Khao Sok rely on the rivers being full.
Although canoe trips are possible nearly all year round, they are a bit more of an adrenaline rush when the river is flowing faster.
The best river activity during the rainy season is River Tubing. When the river is low it is impossible to enjoy an uninterrupted float down the river in a rubber tube but when the river is full it is a real blast.
Check out the smiles on the faces of this group of tubers as they rock and roll down the Sok River.
Swimming areas along the river are also more fun. Of course, when the river is in flood these activities must be curtailed. Safety is always the most important factor.
Can we still stay on the lake in the rainy season?
Yes, the floating bungalows do just that – float – so there is no problem visiting them. You can have a lot of fun hanging out at the raft houses, swimming, kayaking and enjoying the restaurant.
The towering limestone karst islands look even more dramatic against drifting clouds. You will get a great view of them during the boat trips.

What wildlife can I see during the Thailand rainy season?
With frequent rain showers the Khao Sok national park comes alive with lush vegetation and increased wildlife activity.
While trails can be slippery and the rain can be annoying at times, it’s also one of the best times for wildlife sightings.
Maybe it is because there are less humans around and they seem a lot less shy.
Birdwatching is particularly good just after the rain showers when birds are out enjoying the sunshine and hunting for insects.

What are the downsides of the Thailand Rainy Season?
Of course, the rain can make the trails slippery and muddy, but it is not like it is cold. If you have a comfortable, well-equipped accommodation to return to, being out in the rain is great fun. And it is not like it rains all day – although it certainly can. Usually there are a couple of heavy downpours interspersed by clear blue skies and warm sunshine. Be aware – you will still need your sun cream!
- It is always a good idea to check the weather forecast before booking. The good news: because of increased availability you won’t have to book so far in advance.
- Leeches can be annoying but wearing appropriate clothing will help. Our guides are expert at dealing with them.
- Unfortunately, this is not the time to come if you are looking to visit the giant Rafflesia flowers (December – March) and camping out in the forest might be a stretch.
